Here’s a Dancing Walrus

Because you have nothing better to do today.

I Learn Something New Every Day

Today’s interesting little science tidbit:

Astronauts can’t burp in space. Without gravity, gas cannot separate liquids in their stomachs. The More You Know.

Bottled Water Redux

Since moving to Florida, I’ve been drinking bottled water exclusively. I’ve said before that I can’t stand the chlorine smell in the tap water here. In Dallas, however, I never really had a problem drinking the tap water….Okay, not the tap water, necessarily, but the filtered water through our refrigerator.

Yesterday, CNN reported that there are trace amounts of a litany of pharmaceuticals found in tap water throughout the US. Today, they expanded on the story and reported on the extensive (and still largely incomplete) water studies…..that are being done in (among other places) North Texas and Orlando. Read about it here. The things that are happening to fish are cause for alarm; even though the amounts of these drugs are small, I still don’t want them in my body. The evidence is already there that, even in trace amounts, these contaminants are harmful to wildlife. That means there is potential harm to me.

So I’m sticking with my bottled water, thank you very much.

T Minus 4 Hours and 23 Minutes

I’m staying awake, and I’ll be waking Kevin up at 2:15ish so we can watch the Shuttle launch tonight (and yes, this means I’ll be sleeping rather late tomorrow). With any luck, we’ll have pictures galore (and maybe some video, too!) posted tomorrow.

Food Engineering

I love me some bagels. I mean, I REALLY love bagels. The problem (at least for me) is that bagels are in no way good for you. They are empty calories that have no redeeming nutritional value whatsoever. So I began a quest to find the perfect “replacement” bagel. I tried the Weight Watchers ones (too cardboard-y). I tried the South Beach ones (same problem). I was just about to give up (and forgo my beloved bagels), when my sister-in-law suggested the Alternative Bagel from Western Bagels. I have to admit, I was skeptical.

And then I tried them. OMG, these bagels are delicious! I’ve tried every flavor, and they are all fantastic. Best of all, they have less than half the calories of a regular bagel, almost no fat, and they’re full of fiber. Finally, I can enjoy my bagels again. And just for shiggles, I’ve included side-by-side analysis of an Einstein Bros. bagel and the Alternative Bagel.

Einstein Bros.:

Blueberry Bagel: 290 calories, 10 calories from fat, 1.5 total fat, 40 mg sodium, 64 total carbs, 3 g fiber, 11 g sugar

Alternative Bagel (Very Blueberry flavor):

110 calories, 5 calories from fat, 0.5 g fat, 210 mg sodium (ok, higher than Einstein’s), 27 g carbs, 7 g fiber, 0 g sugar

I rest my case.

Missed A Day

I didn’t mean to, but I missed a day. I must have been distracted by all the wind we had here yesterday, but no matter. I bought the most beautiful tulips for my dining room table today: Pink and yellow, and they smell like Spring. I’ve gotten to where I really enjoy having fresh flowers at home (in other news, I have officially become my mother), and I couldn’t pass these up. They’re so cheerful! I also cut some daisies from my plants outside and put those on the coffee table. Between my pretty flowers, the pretty day, and the delicious watermelon I bought today, I’d say Spring is officially here!

Sunny and 85 Today

Sorry to all you folks back home with your 7 inches of snow.

Climbing Up On My Soapbox

I am one of “those” people who believe that antibiotics are evil (I’m not an herbal remedies kind of gal, and there ARE very specific times you have to have an antibiotic, but those are rare). I am also one of those people who doesn’t believe that all vaccines are effective (case in point). I never get a flu vaccine (and I never get the flu…..hmmmmm), and I don’t believe in the vaccine for chicken pox.

So when the debate began to rage about the link between the MMR vaccine and autism, my interest was piqued. I don’t have kids (yet), but I figured that it couldn’t hurt to do a little research. For years, the government has insisted that there is absolutely no link between vaccines and autism. That’s all changing. While they still contend that the vaccine doesn’t CAUSE the disorder, there seems to be something that exacerbates an underlying mitochondrial condition which leads to autism-like symptoms. Interesting, to say the least, and definitely worthy of more research.

I’m with Jenny McCarthy on this one: There shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach to ANY healthcare, even with regard to vaccines. I’m not saying not to get your boosters, and I’m not saying that your kids shouldn’t get theirs; I’m just saying to do your research on ANYTHING you put into your kids. Will I get my kiddo vaccinated? Probably. But you can bet your bottom dollar that I’m going to make sure I know EVERYTHING there is to know before a needle gets anywhere near her.

Got Nothin’

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to blog every day….mostly just to get back in the habit. Back in the early days, I did really well, but the last couple of years I’ve been an admitted blog slacker. I didn’t have the time, or I didn’t feel like I had too much to say. Then I realized that I missed it. Even if it’s just posting something completely inane, I was missing the day-to-day chronicle of my life. Most days, I am able to find at least one thing that either interests or amuses me, but today, I’ve got absolutely nothing. I could wax poetic about my pathetic love for reality TV (I have a problem, I know), but that’s been done. I could talk about how much I’m looking forward to going to the Bahamas this year, but again, that’s been done.

So today, I’m giving myself permission to be void of anything significant and/or entertaining. And now I think I’ll go back to watching last night’s Big Brother After Dark. No wonder my brain is fried today.

The Coolest Commercial You’ll See All DAy

Sure, it’s water balloons, but it’s pretty peaceful, not to mention cool to watch.

My Fellow Texans (and those of you in Ohio)

VOTE. Do it NOW. Go to the polls. It’s your day to have your voice heard, so get out there. I know the weather is super-crappy right now (at least in Texas), but get out there anyway and do your civic duty.

Hello, Clean Screen

I love my MacBook. What I don’t love is that my screen gets dirty pretty easily, and I don’t want to damage it with chemicals, so I try to stick to natural stuff. Well, I think I’ve finally found the perfect screen cleaner. All natural, non-abrasive, and pretty darn cute.

The More You Know

Have you ever read about something completely new and then heard about that very thing right out of the blue the next day? Or maybe an old song you’ve never heard comes on the radio, and then that very song appears in your favorite television show. Well, it turns out that there’s a name for this little experience, and it’s called the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon. This happens to me ALL of the time, but I never knew there was an actual term for it. It seems that the brain has an amazing ability to recognize patterns, even though you thought they were insignificant at the time. It’s not a coincidence at all….it’s selective memory. Read more about it here. It is, in fact, a damn interesting little read.

Sea World Saturday

We went over to Sea World today, and we had a great time! We fed the sea lions, the sting rays (very cool), and of course, the dolphins (AWESOME!!!). It was especially cool to see the little baby orca during the Shamu show Believe. And of course, we stopped at the shark exhibit and the manatee exhibit. We’ve both been to Sea World in San Antonio, but this one is WAY better.
