Climbing Up On My Soapbox
I am one of “those” people who believe that antibiotics are evil (I’m not an herbal remedies kind of gal, and there ARE very specific times you have to have an antibiotic, but those are rare). I am also one of those people who doesn’t believe that all vaccines are effective (case in point). I never get a flu vaccine (and I never get the flu…..hmmmmm), and I don’t believe in the vaccine for chicken pox.
So when the debate began to rage about the link between the MMR vaccine and autism, my interest was piqued. I don’t have kids (yet), but I figured that it couldn’t hurt to do a little research. For years, the government has insisted that there is absolutely no link between vaccines and autism. That’s all changing. While they still contend that the vaccine doesn’t CAUSE the disorder, there seems to be something that exacerbates an underlying mitochondrial condition which leads to autism-like symptoms. Interesting, to say the least, and definitely worthy of more research.
I’m with Jenny McCarthy on this one: There shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach to ANY healthcare, even with regard to vaccines. I’m not saying not to get your boosters, and I’m not saying that your kids shouldn’t get theirs; I’m just saying to do your research on ANYTHING you put into your kids. Will I get my kiddo vaccinated? Probably. But you can bet your bottom dollar that I’m going to make sure I know EVERYTHING there is to know before a needle gets anywhere near her.
