News Snobs
Kamel and I recently had a discussion about good local news vs. cheesy, bad, 80’s-like local news. I am fortunate enough to have really, really, really good local news. I am spoiled. I admit it. Kamel moved away not long ago, and sadly, she is subjected to the “news” station that broadcasts out of Shreveport (sorry, people from the ArkLaTex region, but your news kinda sux). We all get married to our favorite news channels, but for me, it will always be Channel 8. I love everything about it: the news, the traffic, but most of all, the weather.
During the last bout of snow and ice, I was like a junkie. I couldn’t get enough of Troy Dungan, Pete Delkus, and Magic-Fingers McCauley. Kamel even joked that I should hold the phone up to the TV so she could hear, too.
The point of all of this is: This is how you know you’re old. I’ve come to accept the fact that I am a 60 year-old trapped in a 31 year-old body. I know that I have an unnatural affinity for ABC News. Kevin pointed out that I am, in fact, an old lady since I would rather watch Nightline than Letterman.
I’m not alone in my news snobbery, though, since it’s quite clear that Kamel is on the same bandwagon, even though she may not be playing the tune as loud.
There. A post that is suitable even for dial-up! 🙂

As a former resident of the ArkLaTex region and purveyor of a degree that deals with news and the broadcasting thereof, I can attest that the only thing worse than a Shreveport newscast is a Lufkin newscast.
That being said, channel eight in Dallas is owned by Belo Corp, the same as CBS channel eleven in Houston. They put a lot of resources in pulling off a nice newscast that looks good, sounds good, and has good content.
And then, dear friends, we have the laughable excuse for news that is found here in Southern California. Top stories? What color sandals go with your favorite sundress and what makes wild animals cross freeways in the middle of the night. I kid you not.
I’ve given up on news. The national newscasts aren’t my cup of tea and the local stuff makes me want to cut myself. I think I’ll stick to print media. =)

Just a note for those that are on dial- up:
GOOGLE READER
Seriously. Get it, use it, love it.

1. Google reader will not help when someone posts a VIDEO!
2. Seriously, the Shreveport ABC station sucks! The newsdesk and background are hideous and the newscasters are…well they aren’t channel 8 in Dallas! We always seem to get intermittent sound coming from our ABC station which is f’n annoying. It pisses me off. I grew up close enough to Dallas that I am used to Dallas news and Dallas newscasters. Shreveport sucks.

Shreveport is big time! We have KTRE Lufkin/Nacogdoches!!! I can’t wait to hear about another 18 wheeler flipped over on the loop or about someone’s house caught on fire due to:
a. Left his KOOL burning in the ash tray
b. a crystal meth lab caught on fire
But, we do have high speed here!!!

I’ve always taken a liking to my local NBC channels. I’m not as attached to the one here, but I like it better than any of the other ones. Back home, I totally loved the NBC news casters. I can’t wait to get back to Glenn “hurricane” Schwartz. Heh.
